Leftbank Building Directory

The Leftbank Building was built in three parts.  Its original structure was designed by A.E. Doyle and built in 1923. In 2007, after several years of vacancy, a renovation was planned that would utilize the property in a way it had not yet been used.  Over the period of a year, the building was gutted, reframed, and rebuilt to provide studio and office space to a new community of users. To reinforce the connectivity of the building’s new interior, a directional system was needed.
I was invited by Leftbank’s team to provide a solution and to design a directory that coordinated tenet information. My first step was to color code the floor plan by creating a diverse color pallet and assigning each level a specific color. A main directory was designed for the lobby including three

sub-directories for each floor. The completed directories are composed of vinyl lettering, acrylic plate, and steel. Each clear acrylic plate displays a tenet’s name and room number. Tenet plates on the main directory are grouped and placed over each floor’s color (which had been painted on the wall prior to installing the directory).  Sub-directories on the basement, second, and third levels display information specific to the tenets on that floor only.
To accompany the directories and color system I painted a stripe of each floor’s assigned color, wrapping the hallway of every level. The intention of the stripe was to mark areas of activity and to represent where visitors can move about freely.  Check out the Leftbank Project here.
