(Viewed best on dark background.) These dot compositions or 'fields' as I like to call them, were constructed by casting handfuls of round push pins on a table and photographing the resulting arrangement. A series of 70 throws were photographed, each image containing around 100 pins. The photographs were then made into colorless graphics and used to build the larger compositions like those shown above. These dot fields are one of the new methods for creating movement,
density, and composition for my graphic work. This method of sourcing imagery originated from observing games that are played with dice. Gravity, velocity, force, and angle all impact the way the pins are arranged when they hit the surface. In generating an image, these variables integrate a level of experimentation and chance that inspires unique directions of thinking and composition.
