The Commodore is a 19 room boutique hotel in Astoira, Oregon. It was originally built in the 1920's and renovated by Osmose Design in the early part of 2009. During this renovation, Osmose asked Caleb Freese and I to create an original artwork for each room. We conceived an idea by looking at photographs I had found of fishermen throwing large casting nets out to sea. The nets were complex and fluid, each example we found was different. We decided to replicate the process of throwing a net and photographing it ourselves. Freese and I were both excited to be involved with a process that would highlight photography within our work. It took two weeks to gather materials, shoot, and edit the
images. Freese and I arranged our compositions by overlapping images of the nets, adding large color fields, and including the subtle use of graphics to embellish the transparent forms of the net.
When completed, we printed each composition on canvas material at 84 x 59 inches. The prints were installed in the rooms by adhering them (like wallpaper) above the head board, leaving half the print displayed on the wall and other half on the ceiling over the bed. We found this method of displaying the prints a great way to experience the artwork both standing up and laying down. See the documentation of the casting net photo shoot here.
